Three Questions that make Changework (almost) Effortless
In this free event, therapist, actor and hypnosis trainer Joe Kao will be introducing three types of questions that you can use in your coaching or changework practice.
There is no mysterious secret about the questions themselves - they are simply about finding exceptions to the problem, evoking resources, and externalising the client's thinking.
The real magic is in how you artfully use questions in a way that's strategic, conversational and impactful.
In this presentation, Joe will be sharing what he has learned from nearly two decades experience in using questions to:
In the video here, Joe introduces the topic.
Join us on Sunday 8th September 3pm UK Time (we will run for approximately 45 mins with additional time for questions).

I felt I was being thrown into the deep end but in a safe and supportive environment. And by the end of the course, I was beginning to swim! This course could benefit a huge range of therapists, coaches and anybody interested in self-development."

"Joe Kao’s course in transformational storytelling really delivered, and in a way I was not expecting. I thought I was in for a theory deep course on story structure and linguistic tricks but instead it was a very practical with immediate application. As I reflect I realise that this is much better as I could have easily drowned in too much theory and it wouldn’t have been useful. I would love to build on these skills with Joe and I look forward to another course. Thank you Pete and Joe. This is by far the best learning platform for change work that I have come across".
Thomas Wood
"I highly recommend this course. I have thoroughly enjoyed it and each week the time has flown by. After being a part of this I can say I am more able to develop stories to use in the moment. Transformational stories isn’t something you attend and then it’s done. It’s just the beginning of developing a whole vault full of your own stories. Thanks again Pete and Joe".

Join therapist, actor and hypnosis trainer Joe Kao in this new five part online workshop and learn the powerful art of transformational questioning.
The right question, at the right time, can completely transform the way a client thinks of their problem.
The entire issue may even dissolve in that moment, where the client says, "It's like there isn't a problem anymore!".
But how can you develop the skills to do this reliably, consistently and artfully?
Socratic questioning is about reconnecting with the core principles of what make questions so powerful and transformational.
The Ancient Greek philosopher Socrates didn't walk around Athens thinking he had all the answers, or that he was going to "sleight of mouth" everyone into agreeing with him.
He would explore a topic humbly and conversationally, carefully unpacking what another person believed or assumed about a particular subject, and inviting them to reflect on whether their assumptions actually made sense.
Invaluable insights and epiphanies would emerge from those conversations, as people gradually became less rigid, less self-certain, and more curious and open-minded about the world around them.
This way of questioning is equally useful in our lives today.
In this five week online training, we'll be exploring:
• How to externalise a thought, so that a client can observe it dispassionately
• The benefits of representing a client's thinking back to them
• The assumptions and "game rules" behind common emotional problems like anxiety, anger and guilt
• The magic of exception questions
• How to do thought experiments that break down a client's generalisation
• The value of creating impactful, sensory rich examples
• Going beyond the everyday - being willing to be provocative, outlandish and surreal
Socratic questioning gives you a way to break free of rigidity, to become much more flexible in your thinking, and to help others do the same.
Some systems of coaching teach rigid, formulaic approaches to questioning clients, which inevitably feel clunky and artificial.
Other approaches are so filled with techno-jargon that it's almost impossible to implement the principles in real life.
Socratic questioning is different. It isn't about knowing better than the client, or "unconsciously installing ideas" in them.
Socratic questioning is about gently, artfully helping people to recognise for themselves where their assumptions or expectations aren't useful for them.
It's about helping the client's own "psychological immune system" to identify where an idea no longer serves them.
This in turn allows change to happen much more easily, because people suddenly become willing to get out of their own way, and to get on with doing what's useful for them.
We're calling this The Changework Dojo because this is a training about doing.
It’s about getting the skills into your muscle memory, so that that Socratic Questioning becomes second nature to you.
Instead of focusing on endless concepts and pieces of jargon, this training is about practising and refining your core questioning skills so that you can make problems dissolve and open brand new possibilities in people’s minds.

ONLINE MASTER CLASS WITH JORGEN RASMUSSEN

Jørgen says:
"I see more clients for anger management than for any other single issue. A lot of people struggle with explosive anger and rage and relatively few people know how to help them.
Come to think of it, no trainer or seminar/ course I attended ever provided any in depth information much less a solid framework for how to work with these clients.
This is one area where clients are often very motivated to make a change. Quite often, their marriage or other romantic relationships are on the line when they contact you. Some are in deep shame about how they treat their kids when in the midst of these strong emotions. And then you have those who physically use violence when in the grip explosive anger. When not skillfully handled these emotions often bring out the worst in people and ruin relationships.
In this workshop you will get access to the frameworks, tasking assignments and insights I use to help my anger and rage clients. These hard-earned findings are the result of several thousand client sessions over a 27 year period".
Some of the topics that the workshop will cover are:
Jørgen has worked professionally as an agent of change for over twenty years. He is the author of the books “Provocative Hypnosis” and “Provocative Suggestions” which have been widely acclaimed. John Grinder (co-creator of NLP) says of his work… “this is the stuff of genius”. For eight years, Jørgen has been running what he describes as an ‘impossibles practice’. What he will teach in this workshop demonstrates how he has subsequently refined and simplified his approach over the intervening years, so that it is simpler and more effective and more transferable to other contexts.
Jørgen’s work draws on a number of influences including: hypnosis, NLP, meditation and eastern and western approaches to psychology. He is also an experienced self defence instructor and has a regular meditation practice.
Each workshop will start at 12:30pm and run until 6:30pm UK time approximately.
Access to watch a session replays will be made available to all participants shortly after the live session and remain live for at least 12 months. As a result if you are unable to make the session live you can catch up with the replay.
Book now to join us for this exciting workshop.
The early booking price is £147.

Learn how to 'De-Hypnotise' your clients and help them more effectively with issues such as anxiety, depression chronic pain and trauma by helping them see through the psychological illusion it is based upon. Watch Jørgen talking about the workshop below.
Jørgen Rasmussen shares his methods of effective therapeutic change and how to become a more effective agent of change and in this workshop you will:
Drawing on over 25 years of therapeutic practice, Jørgen Rasmussen shares his approach to therapeutic change and his experiences working with difficult or ‘impossible’ clients. This has resulted in him simplifying his approach and going back to the first principles of change. This has led him to develop what he terms the ‘psychological illusion model’ of change work. He also shares his discovery about how many therapists can become more effective by getting out of their own way.
Stop people from 'hypnotising' themselves into problems!
It could be argued that hypnosis is about getting someone to fully absorb themselves into an imagined story…
HOWEVER
Surely, one could argue they were falling for some very unhelpful "self-hypnosis"?
What if there was a way to pull back the curtain for people and help them discover deep insights about the way they have been hypnotising themselves?
What if you could ruin the illusion of their self-hypnosis in such a way that they no longer got absorbed into any of these unhelpful stories?
Jørgen's Psychological Illusion Model provides a way of doing this……
Jørgen believes that almost all psychological suffering is the result of people falling for some simple psychological illusions and misunderstandings.
“This is my conclusion after twenty seven years of full time practice, eight of them running an ‘impossibles practice’ where I would work with people who had not succeeded in various form of therapy, and did so with a no change no pay policy.”
Imagine walking in the desert, suddenly you see a snake in front of you. Immediately, your heart begins to pound, your palms get sweaty, the mouth gets dry, and you have catastrophic thinking about being bitten. Imagine that you able to stop and take a closer look….and when you do so , you realise that there is no snake….its JUST A ROPE.
The moment you see that the snake is a rope its game over, you have seen through a psychological illusion. All the physiological responses subside just from seeing through the psychological illusion.
Jørgen believes what people call mental illness such as depression anxiety, phobias, compulsions, PTSD and trauma etc. are mostly just variations of seeing a snake where there really is just a rope.
The psychological illusion model of hypnosis and change work is an elegant and systematic way of using thought experiments, hypnotic phenomena, games and stories to help people penetrate the illusions that are behind their unnecessary suffering.
The model has been developed through twenty years of client work plus intense explorations of various schools of hypnosis, classic and new code NLP, rational emotive behaviour therapy, developmental psychology, the three principles and both progressive and direct paths of meditation.
Jørgen is convinced that:
"Working in this way is the easiest, fastest and most generative way I have found to work with most clients most of the time".
In the workshop Jørgen will also describe another aspect of therapeutic work that is extremely important yet often gets overlooked in much formal therapeutic training. This is the therapists’ own mindset and beliefs. Jørgen believes that many therapists and coaches are often doing a second job that the client isn’t paying them to do.
From extensive experience as a therapist and a mentor to other therapists, Jørgen believes that many therapists ‘get in their own way’ and as well as focussing on the client, it’s as if they take on a second job of maintaining their own self image, and worrying about their own insecurities and beliefs. This takes up essential ‘bandwidth’ and can make a therapist anxious and preoccupied. Jørgen will teach how you can overcome this obstacle and reduce these tendencies and stay more present in the therapeutic setting where you can operate from flow states and be more fearless in your approach. One analogy Jørgen provides is that of ‘being hypnotic instead of just doing hypnosis’.
The Psychological Illusion Model is constantly evolving as Jørgen, and others using the model, refine following real word use. In this training Jørgen will share his very latest thinking and experience of using the remarkably effective approach.
Unlike many workshops, where you only see things demonstrated in the physical or virtual classroom context, this programme gives you the opportunity to see Jørgen working with real clients. This provides a unique and often overlooked perspective as it is acknowledged that working with real life clients entails a different dynamic and can be more unpredictable and require the ability to adapt, troubleshoot and adjust to whatever arises.
The next Psychological Illusion Model training runs on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th February 2025 12pm - 6pm UK Time each day.

We invite you to contemplate the following questions:
Perhaps you have very clear answers to these questions or perhaps these questions inspire you to search more deeply for the answers.
These are BIG questions with BIG implications for anyone involved in change work.
We invite you to join a two session workshop Practicing Change Work in Constructed Reality: Learning to Operate in the Realm of the Therapeutic Wizards. Psychologist and author Dr Stephen Bacon will be your guide in exploring some of the fundamental limiting assumptions with which much of psychology and change work operates. He will also share the implications of what this means for anyone engaged in change work and how, by challenging these assumptions, it is possible to develop a new freedom and fluidity and to achieve better outcomes.
If you are bold enough to let go of some dearly held assumptions about change work then this workshop will provide the perfect opportunity for you.
The question of how psychotherapy and other forms of change work operates is central for any change agent who wishes to help their clients. Our standard explanations are full of hidden assumptions that appear logical but, in actuality, act to limit positive outcomes.
"But surely what we need are the best and most effective therapeutic tools and techniques?" - Not necessarily!
The most misleading assumption is that psychological techniques have inherent power and are responsible for change. This assumption is easy to test if one reviews the literature on therapist training and experience. Put simply, if techniques have inherent power, then trained therapists—who know techniques—should have better outcomes than the untrained.
"As well as the right tools and techniques, you surely need to build up masses of experience?"
Similarly, experienced therapists should be superior to less experienced therapists because they know more techniques and have practiced them more assiduously. A review of the evidence demonstrates that these hypotheses are not supported; hence, techniques have no inherent power and are, instead, culturally sanctioned healing rituals.
"Ok, so what actually drives effective change work interventions?"
In place of this dependence on techniques, enlightened therapists realize that therapy is actually driven by beliefs and expectations. As long as the client believes the proposed explanation for the problem—and a logical prescription designed to resolve that problem—change work is effective. This new model creates a sense of fluidity and creativity in the therapeutic milieu that is conducive to superior outcomes and to outcomes that prioritize a client-centered stance.
"What else is important to realise?"
Two other misleading assumptions are shown to be false:
and
Removing all three of these assumptions allows the change agent to operate in a more liberated space—constructed reality—that is particularly conducive to superior outcomes. This is the realm inhabited by the “therapeutic wizards” such as Milton Erickson and Frank Farrelly, who use it to achieve their remarkable results.
The workshop will consist of two parts; the first session will focus on deconstructing limiting assumptions and the second session will focus on how to use this new freedom and fluidity to achieve better change work outcomes.
The sessions will take place online via Zoom and involve teaching, exercises and discussion.
In the short video below Stephen talks about a new way of analysing therapeutic wizards.
This workshop will be of interest to anyone involved in change work including psychotherapists, hypnotherapists, NLP’ers. It will also be of value to anyone curious about discovering and questioning some of the fundamental assumptions underlying psychology and change work.

Stephen has a background that bridges spirituality, psychology, and psychotherapy. He has worked as a psychologist in private practice for over 30 years, served as the Vice President for Program Development for Outward Bound USA. He has a Religious Studies degree, and lived in a yoga ashram for almost 6 years.
His current focus has been on exploring how psychotherapy works, the nature of social constructionism, and the connections between spirituality and therapy. He regularly conduct workshops, in the US and internationally, on these topics and have published numerous articles and a recent book, Practicing Psychotherapy in Constructed Reality: Ritual, Charisma, and Enhanced Client Outcomes.

“Despite being on the scene for nearly 150 years, psychotherapy has never has mass appeal. The majority of people who could benefit actively choose not to go. What is more, significant numbers end contact before achieving a reliable improvement in their well-being -25% of more after a single visit. Bacon’s thought provoking book not only explains why but offers a practical and effective alternative for engaging people in therapy and improving outcomes.”
- Scott D. Miller, director of the International Centre for Clinical Excellence
“This provocative book advocates the idea that the therapist is at the core of what makes psychotherapy and effective treatment. Bacon challenges prevailing wisdom by encouraging therapists to develop greater charisma if they want to maximize their impact on client mental health.”
- Michael J. Lambert, Brigham Young University
“I got 20 pages into Practicing Psychotherapy in Constructed Reality: Ritual, Charisma, and Enhanced Client Outcomes and just knew I had to contact Stephen and ask him to share this material. I am glad I did, as Stephen’s work has profound implications for people involved in, or interested in, the whole field of change work”.

Join expert change worker Jørgen Rasmussen and find out about his unique and effective approach to change work.
Tuesday 30th January 2024 6:30PM -7:30PM (UK Time)
Based on nearly three decades of client work, Jørgen created the excellent Psychological Illusion Model (PIM) which embodies his unique approach to change work.
In this FREE online event Jørgen Rasmussen will explain how a lot of people's psychological suffering is NOT based upon them being broken or suffering from a so called mental illness, but is rather the result of them falling for some basic psychological illusions.
People basically misunderstand the nature of their own experience and helping them see its illusory nature can make be the difference that makes the difference.
He will also cover how The Psychological Illusion Model essentially turns hypnosis 'upside down'. The Psychological Illusion Model provides a means of helping people by teaching them to 'dehypnotize themselves' and help them more effectively with issues such as anxiety, depression chronic pain and trauma.
