Jørgen Rasmussen writes:

"We seem to be living in a depression epidemic. If you know how to work with people who depress then there is a huge market for you out there. AND, speaking from experience, few things match the joy to be found in helping someone go from deeply depressed to being able to truly enjoy life again.

At the same time these clients can not only be extremely difficult to work with, if your not careful and insightful you may end up in a dark place yourself if you spend a lot of time with these clients.

To work effectively with these clients you better how a good road map for navigating a terrain where the following pitfalls are common

  1. As Eugene Gendlin pointed out decades ago, successful clients tend to be able to have a nonverbal “felt sense” of the issue while in the office. Its exactly this “felt sense” that those who strongly depress lack, making it difficult to make decisions, solve problems. Almost all psychotherapeutic approaches rely on this “felt sense”. You need to know how to help clients who either cant access, or to help then develop said capacity.
  2. They often have a perception of hopelessness, helplessness, and a sense that “its of no use anyways”. The challenge is that they will often filter everything you do to try to help through that very same filter of hopelessness. You need to know how to get around this.
  3. They often believe in outdated myths such as “I have a chemical imbalance” , which contributes to a sense of helplessness and lack of agency.
  4. Some struggle with “low moods” that have more or less become chronic. When is the last time you heard a nlp, hypnosis, or coaching course address how to deal with that.
  5. A few are suicidal and some have past suicide attempts behind them. You better have some knowledge on this very topic."

Jørgen Rasmussen has 27 years experience of working with clients full time and sees clients from all over the world. In this 4 part series he will share what he has found to be the most useful through trial and error and actual client feedback.

The sessions will provide insights into

  • How to reduce rumination
  • How To Help change relationship to perceptions of hopelessness
  • How to help clients change their relationship to moods
  • Help those with little access to “felt sense”
  • Help those who are not “psychologically oriented”
  • Help clients change their relationship to suicidal thoughts
  • How to navigate some of the relationship issues often associated with depression.
